Curator Heike Dempster will present works by emerging artists from Munich and New York City in the group exhibition “Breathing Through Surfaces” this November at NYC Culture Club.

The exhibition considers breath, light, and perception as shared infrastructures—systems through which power, memory, and ecological entanglement circulate. Across sculpture, painting, installation, film, and sound, the artists construct parallel realities that do not exist elsewhere, but rather coexist with and permeate our own.

At the heart of the exhibition I’LL SEE IT THROUGH THE CHERRY PIE by Luisa Baldhuber and Stefan Holzmair is the question of how reality is constructed in a world where images circulate constantly and lose their supposed unambiguity. In the works on display, we encounter reality as a fluid interplay between construction and projection.

In his collages and sculptures, Stefan Holzmair intervenes in existing orders. Through fragmentation and decontextualization, he transforms the visual content and spatial structures familiar to us into phantasmatic images in which reality and identity appear as an unstable construct riddled with fractures.

Luisa Baldhuber’s pictorial spaces, filtered through dichroic glass (a material that displays different colors depending on the angle of light or the viewer’s perspective), are based on personal cell phone photographs and navigate the realm between the digital image world, spatial construction, and inner places of longing. Iridescent reflections and superimpositions open up visual dreamscapes in which perception becomes fluid and questions arise about the relationship between the inner and the outer, as well as between humans and the environment.

The “Jahresgaben” (Annual Gifts) date back to the founding of the Kunstverein München in 1823, when members received an art print each year as part of their membership. Over time, this evolved into a group exhibition featuring works by artists, most of whom lived in Munich. The “Jahresgaben” are an important format that reflects the richness and diversity of the local contemporary art scene, thereby highlighting the breadth of artistic production in the city. The focus of the Jahresgaben is on artists who have a connection to the city of Munich—who live and work here, have previously exhibited at the Kunstverein München, and/or completed their training here—and who are thus engaged in a lively exchange with the institution and its broader artistic community. The “Jahresgaben” thus remain an important annual exhibition format for the Kunstverein München: a moment that brings together artists, members, and art enthusiasts while simultaneously highlighting the institution’s role as a place of exchange and gathering within the city.
